Discovering Science at St. Mary's University College

ABOUT DISCOVERING SCIENCE

What?
Discovering Science allows junior high school students (ages 12-14) to experience first-hand the joys and challenges of science. During Wednesday evening sessions between Sept 21, 2011 and April 18, 2012, St. Mary's science professors will welcome students into their classrooms and labs to discover that SCIENCE IS FUN, ACCESSIBLE AND HANDS-ON.

Who?
Discovering Science will be led by faculty and staff at St. Mary’s University College and knowledgeable members of the community, including: Dr. Leonid Braverman (physics), Dr. Matthew Clay (chemistry), Dr. Gary Grothman (biology), Dr. Mary Ann McLean (biology), Eric McLeod (chemistry) and students from our biology transfer and education degree programs.

Where?
St. Mary’s University College is located at 14500 Bannister Road SE in South Calgary. We’re easy to get to from Macleod Trail. Here’s a map.

When?
Discovering Science runs from 7:00-9:00 pm every other Wednesday beginning Sept 21, 2011. Check here for the complete schedule.

How?
Students must register online for each session. Cost is $20 per session and payment must be made by credit card online prior to the session. Space and supplies are limited and sessions regularly fill up, so register early.

Why?

Discovering Science is designed to encourage an interest in science regardless of a student’s future career plans. However, we hope to turn junior high students on to science while they can still change their minds about high school and university course choices. Eventually, we’d love to see them as students here at St. Mary’s University College in one of our Bachelor of Arts degree or science transfer programs!
