Preston ManningPreston Manning
Land Stewardship, Ethics, and Faith
Thursday, February 4
7:30 pm, Midlands Building

Preston Manning’s understanding of the Christian faith attaches great importance to the establishment of “right relationships” – including healthy, sustainable relationships between human beings and the environment. Join us for a discussion surrounding the challenges of expressing and practising these land stewardship convictions in the context of the global marketplace and the Canadian political arena.

Mr. Manning served as a Member of the Canadian Parliament from 1993 to 2001. Since retirement from Parliament in 2002, Manning has released a book entitled Think Big (published by McClelland & Stewart) describing his use of the tools and institutions of democracy to change Canada’s national agenda. He continues to write, speak and teach on a variety of subjects including environmental conservation.

Marianna SavarynMarianna Savaryn
Byzantine Iconography

Thursday, March 18
7:30 pm, Midlands Building

Join us for a fascinating introduction to prototypes from Byzantine Iconography. The word iconography literally means "image writing". It is the science of identifying, describing and interpreting symbols, themes and subject matter in the visual arts. Expert iconographer, Marianna Savaryn, will discuss the history of iconography, the theoretical interpretation of Byzantine icons as symbolic art forms, and the role iconography plays in Eastern spirituality.

Marianna was born in Toronto in 1960 and now lives in Edmonton. She completed her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Toronto and Bachelor of Education at Queen’s University. Her studies in iconography began in 1989 at the Sacred Arts Academy in Pennsylvania and continued with a twelve-year apprenticeship with Studite monk Fr. Juvenile Mokrytsky. For the last three years she has collaborated with Fr. Gianluca Busi, an iconographer from Bologna, Italy, on various projects including large icon commissions for churches in Italy and co-teaching iconography workshops. Her icons are in churches in Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Dauphin, Winnipeg, and Ottawa, and are also found in the collection of the Edmonton Catholic School Board, Archbishop O’Leary High School and St. Martin’s Elementary School in Edmonton.

Ms. Savaryn's presentation is followed by an inconography workshop on March 19, 20 and 21. Please call (403) 531-9130 to register or for more information.
