St. Mary’s University College is the home of Western Canada’s only fine art reproduction of The Saint John’s Bible, the first handwritten and illuminated Bible in more than 500 years. The creators of The Saint John’s Bible employed the same techniques used in the creation of the ancient illuminated manuscripts. In doing so, they created a masterpiece of art that speaks to our own time.
Now you can gain insight into the principles that underpin the great traditions of sacred art, while learning skills and techniques to create a contemporary artwork of your own.
To celebrate the arrival of The Saint John’s Bible, St. Mary’s University College is launching a series of workshops and courses focusing on the Sacred Arts. Courses will be offered in a wide range of topics, including painting, iconography, calligraphy, manuscript illumination, stained glass making, and Gregorian chant. Students may wish to take a single workshop or register for a series of workshops to qualify for the newly-created Certificate in the Sacred Arts – Foundations.
Certificate in the Sacred Arts – Foundations
Enhance your understanding of the principles, practices, and methods of Sacred Art and its role in both public worship and personal devotion.
These courses combine hands-on instruction with a theoretical understanding of the theology and aesthetic principles that underlie the development of excellence in the various fields of Sacred Art.
To earn this certificate, you must complete at least 120 hours of course instruction. Individual courses will vary in number of credit hours and tuition cost depending on various factors. While some courses may include a supply fee, in others, students will be provided with a list of supplies which they will be responsible to purchase before the course begins.
In order to maintain the close one-on-one nature of instruction necessary for these types of art courses, enrolment will be limited. Tuition is due at the time of registration. Students may cancel their registration and receive a refund (minus a $50 administration fee) up to 7 days prior to the beginning of the course. After this date, no refunds are given for cancellation.
